LAST JANUARY THEY SANG FOR OBAMA; - THIS JANUARY THEY’LL SING FOR YOU In partnership with the North American Black Historical Museum, River Lights Winter Festival will present the Nathaniel Dett Chorale in concert on Saturday, January 16th at 8 pm at St. John the Baptist Church, 225 Brock Street, Amherstburg.

Members of the Provincial Marine, in costume, will be on hand to greet attendees.The Chorale is Canada’s premier professional choir “dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles, including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues.” Last January they were invited to Washington, D.C., to perform at the Canadian Embassy as part of the Obama inauguration celebrations. http://www.nathanieldettchorale.org/thechorale.php

Karen Gyorgy, Festival Administrator says, “Since Amherstburg was the chief entry point into Canada at the end of the Underground Railroad, we are delighted to welcome to the River Lights Festival an ensemble that sings the music that brought enslaved people to freedom.”Museum Administrator, Kenn Stanton, says, “We are happy to partner with the festival to give our region the opportunity to feel the joy of this wonderful African Canadian music.” Chorale Director, Brainerd Blyden-Taylor says, “Our mission is to build bridges of understanding, appreciation and acceptance between communities of people, both Afrocentric and other, through the medium of music. We seek to dissolve the barriers of stereotype, to empower humans in general, and those of African descent in particular.”
